What is domain?

According to the international agreement each country is allocated with a certain code designation (2-3 letters long) which is called a top level domain or the country domain. E.g., if the website address ends with .ru, it means that the website is located in the domain of Russia; if it ends with .fr — France, .jp — Japan.

Besides, there are several top level domains which are not geographically referenced, but are related to the website targeting — e.g., .com is used for commercial, .org for non-commercial, .edu for educational organizations. "Zone" is another name for a top level domain.

Second level domain names are allocated to companies and individuals under lease agreement based on annual fee (as a rule). Second level domain name, as well as the name of any other domain, shall be composed of numerals and Latin letters, e.g., yahoo.com, lib.ru, b2b.ru

The second level domain name owner can create unlimited number of addresses of the third and lower levels. Thus, e.g., the my-domain-name.ru domain owner may create john.my-domain-name.ru domain name for himself and molly.my-domain-name.ru for his dog.
