About SSL certificates

What's an SSL certificate

A special https data transfer protocol is used to protect data transmitted online when making payments and providing personal information.

Information passed through this protocol is transmitted in a coded form. In the browser, the protocol is visible in the address bar:

For the https-protocol to function on the server, an SSL-certificate should be installed.

SSL certificate is a technology that provides a secure connection between a user's browser and a web server by encrypting data. Communication channel is secured by:

  • Authentication - the certificate is bound to a specific domain
  • Encryption - information is encrypted in such a way that it can only be decrypted using a unique (secret) key.

An SSL certificate contains the following information:

  • Domain name for which the SSL certificate is issued
  • Certificate validity term
  • SSL Certificate Provider Information

The certificate confirms that its owner has the right to use the secret key.

SSL certificates are used by online stores, bank and payment systems’ websites, mail services, websites with user registration and authorization forms.

Since 2017, popular browsers have been marking websites without an SSL certificate as unsafe. This may lower traffic and positioning in search engine results.
